Here's the short version, so you don't have to read the whole thing to get the point: nobody can honestly guarantee you a #1 ranking on Google. Not me, not the agency that just cold-emailed you, not the guy with the slick deck. Google itself says that anyone promising a #1 spot is a red flag. So when someone guarantees it, the only thing they're really telling you is that they're comfortable selling you something they can't deliver. I'm not. That's the whole post, but stick around, because what I promise instead is the part that actually matters to your business.
Why a ranking guarantee is impossible to make honestly
Let me explain it the way I'd explain it to you across my desk. Google's job is to give a searcher the best possible answer. To do that, they run a recipe that weighs hundreds of things, and they change that recipe constantly, all year, without telling anyone the exact ingredients. Nobody outside Google has the recipe. So when someone says "I guarantee you'll be #1," they're claiming to control a machine they don't own and can't see inside.
There are only three ways someone can make that promise with a straight face, and you won't like any of them:
- They guarantee a search nobody actually types. Sure, I can get you to #1 for "purple left-handed widget repair near the old gas station." Zero people search that. A ranking for a phrase nobody uses is a trophy, not a customer.
- They quietly redefine "ranking" so the win is meaningless. A spot in a map pack that only shows when you personally are standing on the sidewalk outside your own shop is not the same as showing up for your best buyer three towns over.
- They cut corners that get you penalized later. The tricks that buy a fast jump are the same ones Google stomps on in the next update. You inherit the wreckage; they've already cashed the check.
I've been doing this for 25 years. I started at 15 and got my first client around 2001, and I've watched a lot of "guaranteed" rankings evaporate. So I'll tell you what I told a client last month: I won't promise you a #1 ranking, because nobody honestly can. What I can do is move you up, prove it's happening, and be straight with you the whole way.
The same people who guarantee rankings are the ones selling you a prettier number
This industry is full of swindlers and charlatans, and I don't say that to be dramatic. I say it because I've cleaned up after them. The classic move is the monthly report: a tidy PDF, a few green arrows, maybe a "we improved your visibility score by an impressive amount." It looks like work. It feels like work. But a lot of the time it's a dressed-up number designed to keep you paying, and the "meeting" to walk you through it is just more of the same — meetings and monthly PDFs instead of actual results.
Think about the incentive for a second. I bill monthly, on purpose — which means every month I have to actually earn the next one, and you can leave the moment I stop delivering. The trap a lot of agencies fall into is proving they earned it with a treadmill of slide decks and meetings — manufactured proof that looks like work. I don't play that game; the proof I show you is the live dashboard, not a flattering chart. And I'll be straight: real results take time to compound, so the smart move is to give the work a real runway, not flip it off after a month or two. The work shows up where it belongs — in the rankings and in your inbox — not in a slide.
And the AI era has made the slop problem worse, not better. Anyone can paste AI output into a template and call it a website or a "strategy." It's faster than ever to produce something that looks fine and does nothing. I work with AI carefully, as a tool under a heavy hand — it screens my spam, it helps me keep hundreds of sites current — but I don't let it do your thinking, and I'd never hand you a guarantee dressed up by a machine. You can read more about how I actually approach that on my AIO services page.
What I promise instead
Here's the part I'll stand behind. Four things, all of them things I can actually control.
1. The truth, up front, for free. Before you pay me a dollar, I'll pull your real numbers and tell you what they mean in plain English — where you stand, what's realistic, and what it'll take. If you want to poke at it yourself first, I put a plain-language SEO and AIO starter checklist out there so you can see what good actually looks like. No mystery, no "trust me."
2. Real control, because I build from scratch. I hand-code everything — no WordPress, no off-the-shelf template, none of the sea of sameness. That matters to you for a practical reason: when your site is built by hand, I can change anything Google cares about down to the smallest detail. A site assembled from a template is like a rental where you can't move the walls. Mine is a house I built for you, and I can renovate any room. That's the foundation everything else sits on, and it's why I treat web design and SEO as the same job, not two invoices.
3. Live proof you can check any time. No waiting for a monthly report, because there isn't one. You log into the same dashboard where you edit your own content, and you see your daily keyword rankings, your actual website traffic, and the real leads coming in — rankings, then traffic, then leads, on one screen. If a phrase moves up on a Tuesday, you'll see it Tuesday. You don't have to take my word for anything; the numbers are sitting right there for you.
4. The truth even when it costs me the sale. This is the one that separates me from the guarantee crowd. Sometimes the honest answer is "this isn't worth it for you yet." Maybe your market's tiny, maybe you'd be better off spending that money somewhere else first. I'll tell you that, even though a "yes" would've been easier for me. I'd rather lose the project than take money for something I don't believe will pay you back.
None of this is the flashy promise. A guarantee is flashier — it just isn't real. What I'm offering is the boring, durable version: honest data, a site I can actually steer, proof you can see whenever you want, and a person who'll tell you the truth. If that sounds like the way you'd want to be treated, take a look at what I do, or just get a quote and I'll start with the honest read on where you stand.
